Dream Jobs?

Over this past week i have been going about the ideals of why we go to college to get that higher education. It dawned to me that a good percentage of us probably will end up graduating and will try to find our dream jobs but will end up not succeeding right away. In our current economy and being that right now we are in a recession i feel that what we are striving for is not going to be enough. For me i feel like if we were to able to find a job that pay us a six figure income we would be ok. I was wrong. After doing some research i found out that once you make 100,000 dollar or more you end up having to pay 50 percent of that in taxes. Leaving you with 50,000 for yourself which if you divide that up over a period of 12 months that leaves you with about 4000 a month. After finding out this information ive come to realize that isnt enough especially if you are planning to raise a family and provide housing and all of your other needs in order to live the life you want to live. Basically what i am trying to say is that most of us unless we are lucky arent going to find jobs that will be financially stable. There are going to be obstacles that are constantly going to get in our way that were going to have to deal with and we have to be prepared for them. We end up going to college to educate ourselves in subjects that we are interested in. I feel that what college doesnt teach us properly or let alone at all is how to deal with life in general. We are taught how to take notes and take exams. There are bigger things in life i feel that need to start being addressed and also we need to become realistic to the fact that unless we put in the hard miles and really start focusing on our futures now we are not going to survive later on.

Tiger out of the hole!

So this past week I was watching TV and came across the news of hearing about Tiger Woods Affair. I was pretty shocked to hear about this because at the time I had no idea it was going on. Apparently Tiger Woods was having an affair with a women named Jamie Grubbs and they have apparently been having this affair for the past 31 months. Woods left a voice mail on her phone asking her to remove his name from his phone because his wife has been going through it. To me honestly I feel for Woods because I can only imagine the pressures he must be going through with all of the media and stress that he has been going through with his family. At the same time I also look down on him because no man should even be caught doing something like that let alone doing it period in the first place. Marrying someone means swearing your love and loyalty to your partner for the rest of your life. Although he has publicly announced his apology to the media and his family I still think that Woods has a long way to go before he back on his feet. However, at this point I would like to also mention a good point that was brought up that I also saw on TV. It was the day after I heard about Woods affair and I was a Good Morning LA ? I believe or some morning show and it featured Magic Johnson. He was talking about TIger and his issue and mentioned how if he just comes out clean and owns up to his mistakes everyone will still love him in the end as long as he shows his understandings of his wrongs. Mentions how Woods has now grown up to be not only a professional athlete but also a public figure that people look up to. I think in the end Tiger will eventually gain back his dignity but it is going to take him sometime. This is issue is obviously no joke and I can only imagine what his family is going through but considering what i heard him say on the news in regards to this situation I feel he is going to do everything in his power to make things right.

Over the past week one of the most critical issues that have come up would be the increase on tuition for the Universities in California. I think that this is a serious problem because now not only is a financial burden on out of state students but on local residents as well. For me being that I am currently an SMC student and working I am very fortunate to be debt free at the moment. Being that I am planning to attend the University of Hawaii next spring I have been looking at the financial costs the semester and must say that now with the uprising costs of the UCs it would be same for me to attend Hawaii if not the same or maybe even less depending on next years tuition levels. I feel that now for local residents who have been planning or are currently planning are at risk because not only are they going to have to pay more money but classes are now not going to be guaranteed. Over this thanksgiving break i have been talking with alot of my friends who currently attend UCs and they have already told how they were stuck with classes that they had no interests in taking and were unrelated to their major but had to pick them in order to take something for the upcoming quarters. I found this very sad to hear because alot of my friends are very bright and already know what they want to go but will not be able to achieve their goals on time due to the lack of classes offered at their colleges. This is a very big problem because now when they graduate, instead of focusing on finding their career jobs and getting their lives on track their going to be paying off loans and trying to get out of their ridiculous debts. I hope that within the next few years the economy will take its turn and hope that the education system rises and students will end up affording the education that they deserve.

Vaccines? Worth it?

The N1H1 flu has been an on going topic for the past couple of weeks and has only seemed to get bigger in my opinion. Just recently in class we took a look at this past weeks edition of the Corsair and viewed an article in the paper about flu shots being given at our SMC campus. From the picture that I saw in the newspaper the line was ridiculous! However to those people in line it must have been worth the wait. I also recall us talking about one that one patient who received the shot but ended up receiving horrible side affects of it and ended up getting a horrible condition where she would end up walking backwards by moving forwards. In my opinion even thought this case was one and million I still feel that there’s a risk for anything and that you always should be cautious. As far as the flu is concerned I think that it is an issue that should be taken upon the person on whether or not they should get the shot or not. I have heard some doctors recommending it and others not, which therefore tells me that there are some doubts about it which is enough to keep me wondering if whether or not it works. I am a very cautious person when it comes to medical issues and being that I am dealing with some medical problems myself I have opt myself to take every possible precaution possible. Once again i feel if the person feels obligated to take the shot then I think they should but if not your concerned and worried about then I would consult your doctor about it and get other peoples opinions first before getting it.

Feminist Movement Still Alive!

For my History 52 class I was given the option to attend a Womens Rights Movement rally on Friday November 6 2009 called “Speak Out”. This whole entire production was done by the West Cost Campus Team. I have not been to a rally in a really long time so this was close to a new experience for me so I was not really sure what to expect. The whole point of the rally was to here out peoples opinions and thoughts towards important issues of Womens rights. The rally was open to the public which mainly consisted of fellow SMC students being that it was held on the campus of SMC. I felt that this was very important for me to attend because it opened up a different view for me in how people get involved towards issues such as Womens Rights which I think is very important. I am a supporter of the Feminist Movement and feel that is a lot of work still to be done in bringing the full stature of womens equality back in full the way it should be. Hearing some of the speakers in todays rally really got me thinking about what women have done for us throughout our nations history and I also feel that we have overlooked many accomplishments that of which have helped shaped our nation the way it is in this current day. I hope that in the future more people will get involved with the Feminist movement and really support and see what women are fully capable of.

Browsing through todays paper i came across a headline stating ” Health Bill Has Support Lined Up”. Now this was something that I had to blog about because of a particular situation that I am going through personally. Towards the end of this past summer i was diagnosed with an eye disorder called ” Haradas Disease” in my left eye which basically means that there is fluid in my left eye that is pushing my retina causing my vision to be distorted and blurry. Anyways back to my point of this blog; because of my condition and being that I am still at a young age I was required to see the head retina specialist in Southern California who is located in Beverly Hills. Being that my family has MINIMAL health insurance basically meaning the cheapest one possible we werent able to have any of the medical charges covered by our insurance. I was lucky however being that the state of my condition is rare and needs to be attended to we were able to workout everything with the medical office. However the point of me stating this is that people need medical insurance to survive. There are going to be situations like my own where people will need direct medical attention but not have the proper insurance care policy to back them up. By viewing this article and reading how democrats are coming up with a compromise to pass universal health care brings hope to me and to many others who are in my position or even worst. I think that this is finally a sign of changes to come and this of all situations being one of the most important in our nation. This event took place last thursday and the House Democrats apparently closed in on the amount of votes needed to sweep the healthcare legislation. If this bill is passed I feel that the nation will received its first stepping stone in rebuilding itself being that its people now have healthcare and are able to get out and work without having the worries of getting hurt and not being able to get treated for their injuries or illness.

Supplements make us FAT!

Tired of being out of shape? Well in my opinion I do not think supplements help the cause. I have been an athlete for a good portion of my life and have never gotten into supplements until my high school years. Even then I would have to say that they do not work. I was actually on facebook the other night and there was ad that popped up on this supplement called ACAI BURN along with other supplements that are suppose to help burn fat and increase your stamina. I do workout at a gym along with some of my other friends who have been working out for quite some time now and they all have not use any supplements of any kind and have all achieved their goals. It is true that protein shakes do help make you bigger but in my opinion thats literally what it does is make YOU BIGGER! I am talking about looking bloated instead of ripped with muscle. When i was taking protein shakes all it did for me was make me look bloated and i was very dissapointed with the results. I was actually talking to one of the personal trainers at my gym and he agreed and said that working out naturally and eating right is the best way to go. He said if you want to get bigger then you need to increase the amount of weight you are lifting and lower your reps and if you want to just get ripped than reverse that process. I feel that this is a very big issue in that a lot of people i see in the gym now are using supplements that Im sure they did not fully research and are paying the price. Then again it may be working up to their standards but in my opinion i don’t think they work. I feel very strongly about this because I was a victim of the “bloated” outcome of taking supplements. A good diet and working out NATURALLY is the best way to go in my opinion. I know that everyone wants to get that summer look as soon as possible but patience, hard work, and determination is really your best bet here.

UCLA Mens Tennis represented by Israel sensation in Quarters of ITA Regionals!

This past weekend the UCLA mens tennis team took part in the ITA regional tournament which took place at Pepperdine University. This is one of the biggest tournaments in college mens tennis in that it is one of the tourneys that plays a huge role in determining pre season rankings for the teams and the players individually. Teams that will competing are all from the west cost region including UCSB, USC, Arizona, San Diego, San Diego State, Hawaii, UC Riverside, and of course host school Pepperdine. This is one of the biggest tournaments of the pre season like i mentioned earlier because the winner receives an automatic bid into the National Indoor Championships which will be taking place in November.

This past weekend the tournament went underway with a lot ball grinding action. I was fortunate enough to head out and watch some of the matches that took place and must say that i was deeply impressed with what i saw. Of all the players i watched i would have to say that UCLA’s Amit Inbar had to be one of the most impressive and showed in his results. The junior from Tel Aviv Israel posted very impressive wins that took place yesterday. Unfortunately I could not make it out for the matches but was able to read about it on the UCLA Mens tennis website. Inbar posted 2 big wins on saturday to move him into the quarter finals. His first opponent was Pepperdine’s Daniel Moss who put up a great fight but in the end fell short to the number nine seeds game. Inbar then moved on to taking the number 5 seed Jaak Poldma of USC which was probably one Inbar’s biggest wins over the summer. Alot of great athletes were seen this past weekend but UCLA overall has a reputation of always making great standings in what ever tournament they take part in. Inbar is also a friend of mind so it was great to read about him advancing in the main draw of this tournament. The postings for todays play has not yet been posted but i am looking forward to reading about it when it is.

Thin is In?

Browsing through todays La Times i came across an add that i found to be quite interesting to me for some reason. It was an add for Macy’s advertising skinny jeans. Now being that i am into fashion and do own a pair of skinny jeans myself i find the title of the article to be quite misleading to many. I am open to all kinds of styles of clothing and must say that skinny jeans ARE not the most comfortable jeans that i have worn. Another issue for me is that not all people can fit comfortably into skinny jeans and by viewing this add it makes them seem like the “in style” for todays fashion era which i find to be not true at all. I will admit that skinny jeans are making a comeback into the fashion world however i do not feel that they are not the “in” product at least for me. The add is depicting a tall skinny male who is clearly leaner than most people that i see on a daily basis. I feel that this add is hurtful to those who dont look like that and makes them feel that need to make drastic changes in their lives in order to achieve the “skinny jeans” look. In my opinion i feel that everyone should wear whatever they feel comfortable wearing and should not care about what other people think. It truly amazes me in todays society how much people are willing to put themselves through in order to attain the look that everyone else thinks is “in” such as the skinny jean look. We live in a country that is constantly thrived upon as the “land of the free” so i feel that this issue even though important to others is something that is big enough to make an impact especially on our youth; so why not live up to that saying and lets all just be free and wear whatever we want without having the concern of what others think.

Big Screens and Big Bills!

Television is something that is constantly keeping this country tied in to what is going on around the world. Nowadays the only way to watch television is on the big screen however big screens require more electricity which means a bigger electricity bill! Being that I own a big screen TV I find it quite enjoyable and more exciting rather than watching television on a smaller screen. However I do agree that we are using up much more electricity in the process and are forcing ourselves into paying higher bills. There are other means of finding out news such as internet access, newspaper articles, and radio however i also do know that not everyone watches television on a big screen TV for that soul purpose. As for me I am into sports along with my friends and we enjoy watching sunday night football games on the big screen. It makes us feel closer to the game in a sense in which alot of people might describe their gaming experience nowadays. I do feel however if California does decide to pull the plug on big screen TVS it might not be such a bad idea. I know that alot of people may argue that we would be depriving ourselfs “quality entertainment” in our own homes but i think in the long run they will appreciate their electric bills being much lower.
